I was first asked to make one of these trays to use during a wedding ceremony, to keep the rings safe while the vows were were being said. it was much smaller than this one, but the idea was there to create a larger one for every day use. I added the feet to give the tray more of a formal feel but also to lift it from the surface of the table/desk. the inside layer of the tray can be personalised to make it unique with your choice of letters.
I use a brown paper pattern to give me the exact outline of the desk tidy, then mark around it using a pointed tool called an awl and a steel ruler, I make sure that my cutting knife is super sharp, then as precisely as possible cut out the large panel of leather required. I mark up the middle square with the awl score around it so that the side will fold up easily. I once again use the awl to draw a very faint cross, corner to corner on the bottom of the tray and use the lines to position the feet . then I cut the panel that will sit inside the tray, glue it in place then stitch mark around the four sides. once the inside has been hand stitched, then the sides can be folded up, matching holes punched in the corners and sewn together, then the whole thing is waxed and finished.
